Dr. Asif Ahmed didn't set out to build a large practice -- he set out to be the doctor his own family could rely on. Growing up in Nagaon, he saw how far patients in small towns like Dhing had to travel just to be heard properly.

Why This Matters

Breast cancer is the number one cancer affecting women in India. About 1 in 28 Indian women will develop it in their lifetime. But here's the important thing: when caught early, the survival rate is over 90%.

Many women in Dhing feel shy or scared to talk about breast health. Dr. Ahmed wants you to know -- there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Checking yourself takes 5 minutes and could save your life.

How to Do a Breast Self-Exam at Home

Do this once a month, 5-7 days after your period ends. If you've stopped having periods, pick the same date every month.

Stand in front of a mirror

Look at both breasts. Check for any change in size, shape, or skin colour. Look for dimpling (like an orange peel), puckering, or redness.

Raise your arms above your head

Look again for the same changes. Both breasts should move the same way.

Feel while lying down

Use your right hand to feel your left breast (and vice versa). Use the pads of your 3 middle fingers. Press gently in small circles covering the entire breast, from collarbone to below the breast, and from armpit to cleavage.

Check the nipple area

Gently squeeze each nipple. Check for any discharge (liquid coming out) -- especially if it's bloody or happens without squeezing.

Check your armpits too

Feel under both armpits for any lumps or swelling. Breast tissue extends into the armpit area.

See a Doctor If You Notice:

•Any new lump in your breast or armpit -- even if it doesn't hurt
•Change in breast size, shape, or skin texture
•Nipple discharge (especially bloody) or nipple pulled inward
•Persistent breast pain in one spot that doesn't go away
•Red, swollen, or warm area on the breast

Other Women's Health Checkups to Know About

Anaemia check: If you feel tired, weak, or pale -- get CBC blood test

Thyroid test: Affects 1 in 8 women. Causes weight gain, tiredness, hair loss

Period problems: Irregular, heavy, or very painful periods should be evaluated

After age 40: Annual health checkup including sugar, BP, cholesterol
